Salaam alaikum (Peace be unto you). Welcome to my home page. This is nothing special; merely a collection of pictures, poems, computer programming projects and various tidbits that make up my life. Feel free to hang out here and peruse of the resources available here. Meanwhile, without further ado, I present to you a little introduction to myself and then the list of pages that are children to this one.
My name is Shahbaz Javeed and I'm a single father of a beautiful son, Mustapha. I'm a computer programmer by hobby and profession. Contrary to the popular image of computer programmers, I cannot hack into the Pentagon computers wtihin a few minutes, nor can I bring the entire infrastructure of the Internet to its knees in a day. But I can order a mean pizza online :) I've been programming since I got my first computer back in 1988 which would put my overall familiarity with programming and computers at around 13 years. I've grown to be quite passionate about some issues of computing, one of which is the freedom of software as advocated by the Free Software Foundation. I'm a huge fan of and avid user of Linux and Open Source Software. I am constantly on the job of advocating Linux and open source software as a better combination than commercial solutions.
My son's name is Mustapha Umar Javeed and he's six years old now, mashaAllah. He's a total riot! If you ever meet him, you might be lured into thinking that he's a meek child who keeps to himself and is very shy around strangers. At best, only your second assumption would be correct. Of course, he moves quickly to rectify that; since you're no longer a stranger the second time you two meet, he can let his intense energy be visited upon your mortal soul at your second encounter with him :) Seriously, though, he's the most adorable child I've ever seen or heard, mashaAllah. Of course I'm biased, but its the only kind of bias that I would tolerate :) You can visit with him elsewhere in this maze of web pages.
Family Photographs
These collections of photographs used to be open for everyone to view. However, I've decided that in the interests of privacy, I will discontinue that practice. Instead, these photographs are now protected by a password. To see them, feel free to email me with a login and a password of your choosing and I'll go ahead and set it up so you can view them any time you want.
Forums
Don't forget to visit the forums that were put in place recently to allow visitors to air their opinions about various issues as well as get support for the programming projects on the site.
Projects
- MIST Registration and Scorekeeping: This app is written in Apache2/mod_perl2 and is meant to allow online registration and full scorekeeping capabilities for any nationwide MIST tournaments. It sparked from the need for a scorekeeping application for DC MIST and hasn't stopped yet :).
- Coding: Some programs I've written. Some are in Perl and are geared towards Linux/UNIX users whereas others are in C/C++ and are graphics programs which run on older DOS machines. You can probably guess which type of program is more recent :)
- Poetry: Some poems I've written. Most of these are morbid poems, but writing them has given me a way to get in touch with what I've been feeling when I wrote one.
- East and West: This is just a little something you can download and listen to if you want. It's my second ever experimentation with a program called Sonic Foundry Acid 2.0. It's all instrumental and might be classified as part of the Techno genre.
- Work in Progress: Something I created using Sonic Foundry Acid 3.... Let me know how like it :).
- Another WIP: Yet another basic rhythm.
- Resume: What I've been up to :)

Recitations from the Holy Qur'an
- These are three surahs (chapters) from the Qur'an. The Qari (recitor) is a man named Muhammad Jibreel. I'm still confused as to his origin; I've heard that he's Egyptian, living in Saudi Arabia. Allahu A`lam. However, he's the best Qari I've heard in a long time. The emotion that he adds to his recitation makes it extremely easy for even non-Arabic speakers to feel the Qur'an and its miracle. Allahu Akbar! May Allah give him a just reward for his efforts, Ameen.
- This is one track from Yusuf Islam's album "A is for Allah". The Qari is, once again, Muhammad Jibreel. This one is of exquisite quality. You owe it to yourself to listen in. The bonus is that this version comes with a translation by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf.
- This is a small piece of RealAudio which is a very addictive chant that praises the final Prophet of Allah, Muhammad (PBUH). Of course I could be totally wrong on that, but that's my take from listening to it with my limited arabic knowledge. Be careful when you click on this link; you might get addicted!
Miscellaneous Links
These links will usually take you outside of my site and will therefore open up a new window for themselves. You will find here links that I want to make available to different people. These links might be concerning something someone asked me about, hobbies, something interesting I saw, etc.
- AntiWar.com: Your best source of anti-War news, viewpoints and information. Coupled with ZNet, this site is that rare gem in the modern world of knee-jerk journalism where each news source is just a mirror of every other source: independent thinkers and honest reporters.
- ZNet: A community of people committed to social change. Here you will find news and views on current events as well as commentaries from the pens of many noted members of the politically sane. Also found here is the complete Noam Chomsky Archive. Excellent resource
- Jawad Qureshi's Home Page: He's the one at the bottom of the page. However, check out the adorable nephew pictures he's put up!!! Not as adorable (mashaAllah) as Mustapha, but its a close race :)
- All the foosball info that you'll ever need. I've got reasonable skills in the game and wouldn't consider myself to be even close to an expert. However, I'm hoping I'll be able to get a foosball table for home :) So, if you're selling, let me know!
